Hydration is not moisturization

Hydrating and moisturizing are used as if they mean one thing. They do not. Hydration is putting water into skin. Moisturization is stopping that water from leaving. One brings the water, the other keeps it there, and once you see the difference, your routine makes more sense.

  • Hydration adds water to the skin. The ingredients that do it are called humectants. Glycerin and hyaluronic acid are two.

What hydration is

To hydrate skin is to give it water. The ingredients that do this are called humectants. Glycerin is one. Hyaluronic acid is another. They attract and bind water, holding it in the upper layers of skin, so skin looks plumper and feels supple.

Hydration is about how much water is there. Nothing more, and nothing less.

What moisturization is

Skin loses water to the air, constantly, day and night. Scientists have a name for it, transepidermal water loss. To moisturize is to slow that loss. The ingredients that do this, emollients and occlusives, settle over the surface and reduce how quickly water escapes.

So the two are not competing. They are two halves of the same job. One brings the water. The other keeps it there.

Humectants, emollients, occlusives: the short version

Three words that cover almost everything on a moisturizer label.

Why hydration alone can backfire

There is a subtlety worth knowing. In dry air, the water a humectant holds can be drawn from the deeper layers of your own skin. Without something to hold it at the surface, hydration can quietly work against itself.

This is why a hyaluronic acid serum on its own can leave skin feeling tight in winter, or on a plane, or in an air-conditioned office. The humectant did its job. Nothing was there to finish it. Having said this, there are many hyaluronic acid serums in the market that parch dry your skin, period, due to a formulation issue. But this is a topic for another journal. 

Hydration is not the finish line. It is the first half of a job that only works when the second half follows.

How we do both, in two serums

This is why our morning is built from two serums, not a serum and a cream. Think of the pair as bi-phase. The Cellular Hydration Serum is the water side, and it hydrates. The Vitamin C Serum-in-Oil is the oil side, and it holds that moisture in. Between them, both halves of the job are covered. We sell the two together as The Morning System, for that reason.

What skin does at night

Skin keeps a clock. As night falls, its rhythm shifts. Renewal, and the repair of the day's damage, become more active in these hours, and older cells at the surface are shed. Skin also loses more water at night, when its barrier is at its most permeable.

For years, the answer to that was a thick, occlusive night cream. We see it differently and the new science is with us. Sealing skin under a heavy layer of cream or balm works against what it is trying to do while you sleep. Skin that is renewing does not want to be smothered.

A night cream does not need to be rich to do its work. It needs to keep skin comfortable while letting skin get on with its own.

So do you still need a moisturizer?

You need the function. You do not necessarily need the format. A cream is one way to deliver emollients and occlusives. An oil-phase serum is another, and a lighter one. What matters is that something in your routine is holding the water in, not what the jar is called.

If your skin feels tight an hour after your routine, the holding half is missing. That is the signal to look for, more reliable than any label.

Common questions

Can a serum replace a moisturizer?

Yes, if it contains the ingredients a moisturizer would have brought. An oil-phase serum with emollients does the holding work of a cream in a lighter texture. A water-only hydrating serum does not, and needs something after it.

Is hyaluronic acid hydrating or moisturizing?

Hydrating. Hyaluronic acid is a humectant, so it draws in and binds water. It does not slow water loss, which means it works best with something layered over it.

My skin is oily. Do I still need to moisturize?

Usually yes. Oil and water are not the same thing, and oily skin can still be dehydrated. The answer is a lighter texture, not skipping the step.

Why does my skin feel drier in winter?

Cold air holds less water, and indoor heating dries it further. In that air, skin loses water faster. The holding half of the routine matters more in winter than at any other time of year. 

Does skin get drier after menopause?

Yes. Changes in hormone levels, such as estrogen, are associated with a thinner, less resilient barrier that holds water less well than it once did. The response is the same principle, applied more attentively. Hydrate, then hold, every day rather than only when skin complains. You will also find interesting to learn that the skin barrier is more than just a controller of water loss. The barrier is a living ecosystem and is in constant communication with the rest of the body. The hydration + moisturization of the barrier is key for the biological, chemical and physical quality of the skin and beyond. 

Should I apply my products to damp skin?

We can't speak for other brands. But we recommend our serums to be applied to a slightly damp skin. This way, our serums will be applied more evenly with 3-5 drops.

None of this is complicated. But it is the difference between skin that feels good for an hour and skin that feels good all day. Hydrate. Then hold.
